In our family we make election day a big deal. We celebrate the day by eating out after we voted. Growing up in the restaurant industry I was exposed to political debates at a very young age. Most likely I was debating politics with patrons before I was in first grade. Growing up in Germany talking politics was normal. It was always in good banter and ones election ended everyone would go on with their normal lives. It always felt healthy and was done with a pinch of good humor. I admit I miss those days. It is important to talk about issues, society, its problems, issues  and yes religion. Those should not be the dirty topics one needs to avoid at gatherings.  Many of the problems we see now are partly do to this secret agreement not to talk about those topics. Unless we live in a bubble those things matter to everyone.

Artist have been known to push the political envelope. Exposed societal problems and challenged bad policies. They lift up the carpets to show the dirt, expose the wrong, document history and call for change. Many have done so knowing they would endanger their own lives and or get arrested. They are the unsung heroes among us.
