The first time I heard the names Herbert Vogel and Dorothy Vogel was in my art history course. Until that day like so many I was under the impression collecting art was reserved for the wealthiest among us. Where did this seed get planted? I certainly do not recall anyone ever telling me that I had to be wealthy to start an art collection. The Vogels are a perfect example of two people starting collecting art simply because they love art. They would look for new and unknown artist which would give them a range of prices fitting their income.  Before they knew it, they became known in the NY art circles. Truth is anyone can start collecting art, no matter what the budget might be. Art is amazing that way and can be tailored around any budget, style and media. Art does not discriminate and that is what makes it so approachable.

How does one start an art collection? Start paying attention to what kind of art appeals to you. Art is never a bad investment if you love it first, even if you never intended to resale the art. Ones you know the style of art you are drawn to, check if there are any artist in your area who create that kind of art. Getting to know the artist in person ads another dimension and excitement to your new art collection.

My top 10 list on how to start an art collection:

  1. Find your art style
  2. Research local artist, branch out from there
  3. Get to know the artist on social media and in person
  4. Set a budget, start small and build your collection over time
  5. Make sure the art work is signed
  6. Ask for a CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY/ Provenance (documentation that authenticates a particular art piece)  * Artist I added a ling below on how to write one.
  7. Look for limited editions
  8. Ask for payment schedule
  9. Educate yourself on archival storage and protecting your art collection
  10. Keep an eye on emerging artist

Most of all love the art, and enjoy the process.
