The first place I heard about Facebook censoring a 30,000 year-old Venus of Willendorf as ‘pornographic’ was on the Colbert show and later the Daily Show. FB apologized for its mistake soon after. This brought back my own memories when Twitter flagged one of my coffee bean pictures as ‘pornographic’. For some reason I did not find the time to contest this censoring. I wonder how much art is censored daily? How much do we not see anymore, because some algorithm decided it was not fit to be seen on their platform.

With my resent problems with Instagram and my account being disabled, I realized that those SM companies have a tendency to overreach and control artistic content. Yet artist like myself invest a great deal of time in those platforms. Platforms which could not exists were it not for artists and their content.

Due to IG nightmarish customer service or the lack they’re off, I have almost a month time to contemplate my web presence. You see, I had another IG account I had not been using under my main email. In order to set up a new IG account to replace the one they disabled I had to first delete this account. What IG failed to mention before I started the process of deleting that account, was that it would take until November 28 before the account would be deleted.Which leaves me for the first time in years without an IG account.

This reality made it crystal clear that SM companies have way too much control over our artist businesses. Just like my coffee bean image, I plan not to blend away silently. From here on I will make sure my web presence will become more diverse. When in the past I might have balked at signing up for an email list or newsletter, now I will embrace them. They might be the only way I can stay in contact with people and certainly help me take back control.
