During my two year stay in Italy my gear got a real beating and it was time to look into replacing my camera. It had served me well for about 10 years. That is old age in the world of digital gear. Dragging my gear to every place I traveled I was amazed it still functioned. All my lenses needed a major tune up and my camera body was on it’s last leg.
In the past I would have stayed with the trusted brand I have been using, but photography is at a crossroad and mirrorless has become the new norm. It was time to reevaluate the professional tools I was using and to contemplate how to move ahead. For a second I felt disloyal to the brand I have come to trust. There is comfort in staying with the same equipment. But the love was not mutual and I quickly got over myself.
After taking a detailed inventory of my current photography gear and weighing out the pros and cons, I finally made the switch from Canon to Sony. The equipment investment was my biggest concern, next the learning curve I might face. However, any upgrade even if I stayed with Canon would have meant using an adapter or buying all new lenses. The fact that Canon stops supporting older gear made the decision easier. I am one of those research nerds who reads equipment specs, consumer reports and searches for new products recalls and problems. I loved the idea of lighter gear and the smaller body of the Sony fits my hands more comfortable. To my surprise the transition was not bad at all. After programing the extensive menus I was good to go. No buyers regret on my end. Now if we could just get Adobe to come on board and support the Sony raw files.
Affinity photo to the rescue. I was introduced to this software by another artist. To do a quick edit I started using FastRawViewer which again was recommended by a fellow artist and safes so much time to run a quick edit.
The larger files do take up a lot of time opening up in the traditional editing softwares. With FastRawViewer it takes seconds to see them all. A lot of new in a short time. After the last two years I am all for it and ready for change.
I love learning new skills and getting to know brand new gear/toys is so much fun. opening the first file was like opening a birthday gift.Of course sometimes I had to slow down read up on this or that and watch a tutorial. I hate reading product instruction and find them dreadful for the most part. Most all the time when I get something new and need to figure out I turn to youtube for advise. Maybe one day I will start my own channel to return the favor.
How about you, do you embrace the new or like to stick to what you know?
Note: I do not get any financial benefits from mentioning the companies in my post. They are simply great tools which came recommended to me by other artist and I am paying it forward. A big shoutout to Greg from Camera Shop for guiding me along the shopping journey: https://thecamerashoponline.com
