During my time in Italy I was introduced to Arte Povera. Artist would use materials, today we would refer to as recyclable, construction and botanical waste. There was no lack of variety in the work they created. From small whimsical works to large warehouse size sculptural structures and installation. Being exposed to this art form opened my eyes and made me realize just about anything put in the hands of an artist can be transformed into art. Furthermore, it made art accesible to just about anyone who wanted to create. Arte Povera was a game changer in the arts.

When I was challenged to go back to my culinary inspirations, I so often had chosen for my art, it was really not a far stretch that my thoughts traveled to the very thing I would casually discard during my food preparations. The moment all begun to click for me, the wheels almost choked they run so fast in my brain. Idea after idea kept flooding in. I took notes and contemplated how I would execute them. My first attempt felt clumsy and stagnated. Which each evolution my work would take on a new life. In the end I did not only have one body of work but a whole series.
I am sure as time passes other creations will spring out of the initial concept and will find their place in my studio and galleries. The macro photograph above was one of my first attemps using botanical skins (kitchen scraps) to create a macro collage. The colors and different textures create delightful abstracts.
