Nostalgia kicks in this time of year thinking about all the holiday markets I have visited. In Europe the days are short and the holiday lights are a welcome diversion from the dark. Visiting the markets has become tradition and meeting place for friends after work and school. Long before we would reach the market the smells of cinnamon, gingerbread and mulled wine would hit our senses, leading us to the market. I would skip breakfast and lunch knowing I would indulge on all the seasonal goodies. In great anticipation we would stand in line almost drooling imagining the delicious first bite of the treats we would be ordering. Sometimes the food did not make it to the table one of us would be holding for us, because, we practically inhaled our food. Laughing we would meet up with our friend give them their foods and drinks and sat down to enjoy ours over lots of laughter. From time to time some of us would stroll the market under the excuse to walk of the foods we just consumed only to come back with another treat. Good times all around.

I admit, this is the time of year am getting a bit homesick. To cure my holiday blues, I pull out all the guns and make my favored treats for friends and family. If a gallery opening happen to fall around this time of year, I apologize but I have no shame and will torture my visitors with those treats. As promised I am sharing my mullet wine recipe with all of you. Enjoy!

Glühwein/ Mulled Wine

A German traditional warm spiced wine winter drink served on holiday markets and homes.

1 bottle of red wine

1-2 small Orange

1 whole cinnamon sticks

5 whole Cloves

1 Anise star

3 Allspice Berries

1 small bay leave

small piece of a Nutmeg

1-2 tablespoon of Maple Syrup  or to taste

1/2 Vanilla Bean

Brandy, rum or amaretto to taste

Put red wine in a large pot of crock pot, add spices and simmer on low heat. Simmer for about 10-20 minutes and reduce to low heat just to keep it warm. Add maple syrup and brandy to taste. Add slices of oranges and serve. If you don’t like the wine to get to spice strain spices after 10 minutes. Crock pods are great to keep mulled wine warm.

 * Be careful not to overheat the wine or you cook the alcohol out of it.

Mix it up a little create your own favored mulled wine recipe. If you like it more spicy slowly ad more spices as the wine mix simmers, add less if you like it milder.  If the wine is on the sweet site the maple syrup can be reduced or omitted. Honey and brown sugar can be used as alternative sweetener. Apples and cranberries take the old world recipe across the pond.
